POSOFT Project: Revolutionizing Automotive Positioning with Software-Based GNSS
The POSOFT Project (POsitioning SOFTware for automotive) has been developed by Idneo Technologies S.A.U. in collaboration with the Israeli company Galileo Satellite Navigation LTD. This initiative has been funded by ACCIÓ under the grant program for industrial research and experimental development projects with international cooperation (Nuclis R+D international projects).
A New Approach to GNSS Positioning
The main goal of this project is to explore new ways of implementing satellite positioning technologies (GNSS), which have traditionally been developed using hardware-based approaches. Instead, POSOFT proposes an innovative software-based solution, aiming to evaluate its advantages in terms of system efficiency, flexibility of the solution and cost reduction in both development and manufacturing.
Specifically, the POSOFT Project introduces a software-based GNSS positioning system for vehicles, eliminating the need for a hardware receiver, which is typically required in such systems.
Real-World Testing and Future Potential
The project has enabled the evaluation of the software positioning engine in both laboratory environments and real driving scenarios. The system has demonstrated its ability to provide real-time positioning, satellite status tracking and other relevant GNSS data.
The results confirm that this software-based positioning approach could replace traditional GNSS modules. However, there is still room for improvement, particularly in the design of GNSS radio-frequency signal acquisition systems, which could further enhance performance.
This breakthrough paves the way for a more cost-effective and flexible GNSS technology in the automotive industry, offering exciting possibilities for future mobility solutions.
