Important new developments in the automotive sector

At present, it is in the field of technology where important new developments in the automotive sector are emerging. A good example can be seen in Internet-connected infotainment systems, in this case closely related with the introduction of autonomous driving: over time, the occupants of vehicles will become more than just passengers, gaining the opportunity to engage in other in-car activities while the vehicle drives itself. However, infotainment in connected cars must go hand in hand with driving safety.

The car industry now offers technological applications that were unheard of in the past; these support the operation of vehicles, as well as the safety, comfort and entertainment of their occupants. Some external devices (smartphone apps, for example) are linked with the car’s audiovisual installation, making it possible to listen to music from a mobile phone through the loudspeakers, use a telephone’s GPS for orientation, or control the multimedia functions of compatible applications with one’s voice. Connected cars have gone one step further and include navigation systems, video players, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, in-car Internet and a Wi-Fi connection… Other applications are directly linked with driving safety.

Connectivity, entertainment and safety

According to the Goldman Sachs banking group, in 2030 60% of all cars sold in the US will be autonomous. This growth will also drive an increase in infotainment and safety applications.

Connection with brands. Enhancing passengers’ in-car experience is possible if they can connect and interact with their favourite brands and the services they need during a trip (petrol stations, restaurants…). Driving is no longer just a route, but an experience.

Online entertainment. In-car online entertainment means being able to read news, listen to music, watch films, play video games, use applications… even enjoy a 5G connection. This type of connectivity supports connecting to cloud services almost instantaneously.

Online navigation and remote assistance. From a safety perspective, thanks to advanced driver assistance services, connected cars have access to traffic information in real time, the vehicle can correct the steering automatically and emergency braking can be applied if an unexpected situation occurs. Further remote assistance services that are already available in connected vehicles include downloading routes and directions on the navigator, opening and locking doors at a great distance, and calling emergency services in the event of an accident.

Smart components

Beyond the road itself, there is another context within which infotainment and safety systems must be considered. There are millions of inhabitants moving around smart cities, where the promotion of connected, autonomous and electric vehicles should be seen as a key measure for making these cities habitable (reducing accidents, traffic jams and pollution).

Cars are now fitted with multimedia connectivity systems that communicate with smartphones and allow us to use certain functions without making it dangerous to drive. For display purposes, there are a whole range of systems from those with small monochrome displays to more advanced systems with larger, tactile colour displays.
